About

The Personal Growth Project is dedicated to spreading awareness of the reality of an emotionally abusive relationship, so that the trauma it causes may be better understood, and so that survivors can find answers , clarity and peace of mind.

Emma Rose set up the TPGProject to support the growth of survivors, through spreading knowledge of emotional abuse, as well as advice on self-care and personal development, and managing toxic relationships. The goal is for survivors to gain closure, move forward with confidence and thrive!

Emma has a background of working in schools with teenagers with emotional and behavioural difficulties, many of whom were in care and had experienced forms of abuse. She worked with young people to help them recognise healthy and unhealthy bonds in their relationships, and to help them gain confidence and clarity.

Emma has since gone on to study in Psychology and Counselling skills, which has provided her with knowledge of research backed psychological tools to support personal development, such as in CBT and Positive Psychology. She has in-depth knowledge of the experiences of abuse which has been gained through attending courses, first person accounts, self-teaching and personal experiences.

After experiencing the devastating impact of emotional abuse, we embark on a journey in search for answers.

At a time when we need reaffirmation of our experiences, it is important to gain clarity and understanding of the relationship we have endured, and it can be difficult to find this when we first start to educate ourselves on abuse. Compared to other abusive relationships, it can be hard to be confident that an emotionally abusive relationship measures up as abusive at all, and we start to trivialise and minimise our experiences which only exasperates the trauma and delays our healing.

But it does! Emotional abuse is present in ALL abusive relationships. If someone physically abused you without first wearing you down with emotionally abusive tactics, there is no way you would stay in the relationship! And it is the effect of emotional abuse that often has the longest lasting and most devastating impact, regardless of whether other types of abuse are present in the relationship.

Knowledge is Power! The more we understand the abusive relationship dynamic the more we will be able to understand what has happened to us and gain back control of our thoughts and our mind.  And Community is Support! In reading and relating to others’ experiences of abuse we no longer feel isolated, insane or misunderstood and we can begin to build confidence and heal.

All survivors of abuse must embark on a journey of personal growth, as we have been stripped down by the abusive relationship. Although the journey is tough and painful, with the right support, we can grow stronger and more confident in who we are than we ever were before. If you have not experienced abuse, then I hope The Personal Growth Project may help to provide insight into what goes on behind closed doors.

It is a long journey of healing and growth, but don't give up, and let’s keep moving forward together.

*The purpose is not to exclude survivors of other forms of abuse, as you will also have experienced emotional abuse and know of the damage it causes, but rather to create a space where survivors who have only experienced emotional abuse may feel validated and stop feeling as though it was nothing in comparison.
